HERBALISM 101

meet the herbal elecutary

Not just an infused honey. So much more.

Electuaries are centuries-old herbal remedies made by stirring powdered herbs and spices into honey to create a medicinal paste. Because the herbs stay in the honey, every spoonful contains whole-plant benefits.

FAQs

What is an herbal electuary?

An electuary is a nutritive and medicinal paste made from mixing powdered herbs and spices with honey.

It’s a term that’s a bit archaic (and is thought to be derived from a Greek word meaning ‘to lick up’), so we use the term interchangeably with “herbal honey.”

Technicalities aside, we think it’s one of the more delicious ways to help the medicine go down!

Is an electuary the same as an infused honey?

No, an infused honey has had the plant material strained out of it. A honey electuary has dried powdered herbs mixed in to create a medicinal paste.

For maximum potency, we fresh-grind our own botanicals to a fine powder and then slowly stir them into a sweet-as-can-be raw wildflower honey made by our very own local bees.

You’ll get the whole-plant benefits in each spoonful, and as the powdered herbs gently infuse into the honey, the flavor will mature and deepen.

How do I use an herbal electuary?

For a sweet, therapeutic treat, enjoy a spoonful on its own. We recommend 1 teaspoon per day.

You can also add a dollop to your tea or coffee, stir into your oatmeal or yogurt, blend into your smoothie, and otherwise, use herbal electuaries in any way that you'd normally use honey.

What does Chill Pill pair well with?

We love getting creative in the kitchen with our herbal honeys. Here are a few of our favorite ways to use Chill Pill Herbal Honey:

  • Stirred into oatmeal or overnight oats with fresh berries
  • Drizzled over Greek yogurt with granola
  • Spread on sourdough toast with salted butter or ricotta
  • Blended into a smoothie with banana, frozen hibiscus, and coconut milk
  • Drizzled over a fruit and cheese board
  • Spread inside a wrap with turkey, arugula, and goat cheese
  • Stirred into iced hibiscus tea with a squeeze of lemon
  • Stirred into warm oat milk or chamomile tea before bed
  • Used as a glaze for roasted stone fruit (peaches, plums, cherries)
  • Swirled into plain whipped cream or mascarpone

How long does it last?

We recommend you use your electuary within 6 months after opening.

Why has my herbal honey thickened or solidified?

Herbal electuaries naturally thicken and may firm up over time, especially in cooler environments... similar to how raw honey crystallizes.

While this can make them less spreadable, they’re perfectly safe and delicious to enjoy.

If desired, to soften, simply place the jar in a shallow bowl of warm water for a few minutes, or remove the lid and microwave for 5 seconds (and no more than 5 seconds!)
