about us

What is Botany Culture Co.?

We're a small-batch herbal pantry rooted in the southern Appalachian mountains of Western North Carolina. We make herbal honeys (what herbalist's call electuaries), elixirs and drinking vinegars including fire cider and digestive bitters, fresh-herb finishing salts, loose-leaf herbal teas, and dried edible flower blends.

We source ingredients from small organic farmers in the United States. Everything is made in small-batches, by hand.

Where are your herbs and honey from?

The vast majority of our herbs come from small domestic farms we know and trust. A few, herbs that we can't reliably grow in bulk here in the United States (like cinnamon), come from larger suppliers who hold themselves to the same bar we do: rigorous quality standards, fair pay, and fair treatment for the farmers and foragers behind them.

Our honey is always raw and sourced locally from southern Appalachian beekeepers.

Ingredient transparency and traceability aren't optional for us. We choose quality and documented origin over speed or scale, every time.

What makes your products different from other wellness and herbal product brands?

We come from farming, whole-food nutrition, and a long love affair with the magic made in the kitchen, not from the lab or supplement aisle. Our food-forward products are built around flavor and whole ingredients first. You won't find synthetic additives, filler ingredients, or clinical claims here, just the inherent wisdom of the plants that nourish us.

You used to have a recipe on your blog that I can't find any more. Can I find it elsewhere?

Botany Culture Co. actually started as a blog, full of free herbalism education, herbal recipes, and lots of DIY herbal remedies. Many of those live on in our blog, Nature Club, but as we've evolved into the herbal pantry that we are today, some no longer felt like a fit and were retired.

If there's a specific recipe you're missing, reach out and we'll our our best to track it down for you

understanding our products

What is an herbal honey?

Our herbal honeys are traditional electuaries, dried powdered herbs stirred into luscious raw honey to create a viscous and wildly delicious paste.

Unlike infused honeys, where the herbs are strained out, the herbs stay in our honeys so that you're getting whole plant benefits in every spoonful.

How do I use herbal honeys?

In our world of food-forward herbalism, we use herbal honeys in two ways:

  • By the spoonful: the most direct and therapeutic tonic approach
  • Anywhere you'd use honey: stirred into tea or coffee, drizzled over yogurt or fruit, spread on buttered toast, whisked into dressings and marinades

What is an elixir?

"Elixir" is a broad term that different herbalists use in different ways. At their simplest, herbal elixirs are sweetened herbal extractions.

They use a liquid base, most often alcohol or vinegar, to extract beneficial compounds from herbs. Then, they're sweetened for palatability and preservation.

Our elixirs are technically herbal oxymels and consist of a raw vinegar base sweetened with local honey, maple syrup, or sorghum.

How do I use digestive bitters?

Our Gut Flora Digestive Bitters is a raw vinegar and honey based bitters (no alcohol, no glycerin) that's best taken before a meal to prepare the digestive system to recieve food.

We recommend taking 2 dropperfuls directly on the tongue about 15-20 minutes before a meal. However, you can also take during or after the meal if you forget.

How do I use fire cider?

By the spoonful or the shot for the strongest dose. We also love to use our Hibiscus Orange Fire Cider in the kitchen. Try this Massaged Kale Salad with Creamy Fire Cider Hemp Seed Dressing recipe. It also makes for a mouth-watering quick vinaigrette and does wonders as a splash in a Bloody Mary.

Do any products need refrigeration?

Some do. We recommend popping many of our elixirs in the refrigerator after opening for a longer shelf-life.

Check the label or product page for storage instructions specific to each item.

Why don't you use glycerin in your products?

Glycerin is a common clear, odorless sweetener used to make herbal extracts more palatable. It's a heavily processed byproduct of biodiesel and soap production, most often derived from soy, coconut, or palm, and offers very little in the way of nutrition.

We use locally-sourced raw honey instead. Honey brings enzymes, antioxidants, and a whole terroir of flavor glycerin can't match.

For us, honey is the more sustainable, nourishing, and shelf-stable choice, so it's what we build around.

That said, glycerin has its place. It's a useful, low glycemic option for alcohol-free herbal extracts, especially those made for kids.

Why do your products cost what they do?

What you're holding isn't a bulk product with a markup. It's the ingredients themselves, the herbs and raw honey we chose over cheaper alternatives, plus the hours it takes to formulate, design and test packaging, measure, mix, and jar every batch by hand, one at a time. Prices reflect what it actually takes to make something this way:

  • High quality, vibrant, fresh herbs from small farms in the USA, not bulk commodity suppliers sourcing from overseas
  • Nourishing raw, local honey instead of cheaper, processed sweeteners
  • Glass and recyclable/compostable packaging over cheaper plastic
  • Small-batch production to maintain integrity and high quality
  • Every batch mixed, filled, and labeled by hand

We choose to make things this way because it's the only way our work stays honest, ethical, and true to our sense of purpose in this world. In a world that craves instant gratification and has many choices to choose from, we're so grateful you choose to support our small, handcrafted business.
